A while back as I scrolled through IG. Mind numbing post after post, one finally hit me. It was like he was sternly looking straight at me. What he said wasn’t rocket science, it wasn’t some secret insider knowledge and I couldn’t believe that I had missed it.
The wisdom imparted was that you must tell the origin story…And we realized that we hadn’t told NB Tee Shot’s story.
What feels like so long ago now, right when baggy over-sized t-shirts were about to die their natural death. Came Nike’s just do it t-shirts. They were the beginning of tag lines printed right across the chest that couldn’t be ignored. Then the remixes of those Iconic t-shirts came, you had Homer Simpson sleeping on the Nike Logo, Adidas playing on looking like the shape of Mary-Jane. They grabbed our attention whether you saw one at a concert, a jog on the park, walking into the gym.
Then Zap. A flashing white light hit us and everything became about looking simple, plain, and the word of the day became Minimalism. Literally there were just mini logos on the breast of every T-shirt. The colors were gone, the art, the drawings were just forgotten. And with that we lost an art form of expression. And I don’t know if anyone even noticed. Our heads were all drowning in our phones and there was nothing to grab our attention as we just walked on by each other in a sea of gray, black, white, off-white soft color palette.
We TOOK NOTE though and fired up the printer and began our last grasp at fighting the plain tee movement. Creating T-shirts that expressed Tha Culture. That expressed what’s playing in your head phones, the moments which imprinted on to who you are.
And we do this for the moment when someone spots the art strolling by them, nudges their friend and says “That tees Hot”
